- The success of precious metal mines depends on the purity of ore removed and the market price of the metal. Suppose the purity of gold ore must be at least 0.5 ounce per ton of ore in order to keep a particular mine open. A random sample of 10 deposits of ore were selected and the purity of each one was measured. The average purity of gold ore that was sampled was 0.53 ounces. If the purity of gold is assumed to be normally distributed with a standard deviation of 0.04 ounces, test whether the mine should continue to be kept open.
