- A lurking variable is a variable that is not one of the explanatory or response variables but it’s presence may have an influence on the relationship that you are trying to model causing you to overstate or understate the relationship between the explanatory and response variables.
eg. When examining mother daughter pairs, one observes that there is a positive correlation between their weights. One concludes that there must be a strong genetic factor that causes some mother/daughter pairs to be overweight.
